Rate of death from oncological diseases ranks 2nd worldwide after cardio-vascular diseases.
Liver cancer ranks 5 among men and 8 among women among all malignant neoplasms in the world. Based on the data of Russian Anti-Cancer Society, over 5,000 primary liver cancer cases and over 130,000 metastatic liver cancer are diagnosed every year in Russia.
Today liver cancer is hardly curable, and metastatic one is almost not curable.
Except for the facts mentioned above, it is to be mentioned that liver is third widespread localization of metastatic affection, after lymphatic nodes and lungs among prevailing majority of solid tumors. Metastatic liver affection is associated with high rate of death of patients suffering from malignant neoplasms of the stomach pancreatic gland and colorectal cancer.
Operative treatment still remains the only method of liver cancer radical treatment. Liver cancer treatment standards have not been developed. Transplantation is the only method for radical treatment of liver metastatic cancer. Approximate cost of liver transplantation operation in German clinics is 250-280 thous. Euro.
Pancreatic gland cancer is characterized by a bad prognosis. Survival rate in case of such localization of the malignant process is three years or less. The only standard treatment method is chemotherapy together with resection of the pancreatic gland, however such treatment can be applied only for 10-25% of patients, and the efficiency is low. In case of unresectable process, prognosis is unsatisfactory and survival period is only a few months, and mono chemotherapy is usually ineffective.

OOO BEBIG develops and implements the technology of radionuclide therapy for treatment of such diseases, as treatment methods currently applied by doctors cannot ensure high quality of patient’s life and delay course of a disease.
The basic idea of the radionuclide therapy is delivery of radioactive isotopes directly inside the tumor and further destruction of it by the ionizing radiation. Such treatment techniques with various ways of radionuclide delivery have been successfully applied for prostate gland cancer treatment, thyroid cancer and other diseases treatment.
Nano-structured micro spheres, being developed by OOO BEBIG, based on silicium and phosphorus alloy are designed for treatment of primary and metastatic unresectable treatment of liver cancer and pancreatic gland cancer, and production of polymeric microspheres and microspheres based on amorphic silicium compounds (special glasses) will allow to obtain an effective method of metastatic and primary liver cancer treatment method, in the first turn.
Nano-structured microspheres based on silicium and phosphorus alloy
Nano-structured microspheres based on silicium and phosphorus alloy – an active implanted medical product:
- microparticles of superpure (99.999%) nano-structured silicium with average diameter of 30 micron;
- internal structure of microparticles contains atoms of phosphorus-32 radioactive isotope.
Indications:
- treatment of non-operable primary and metastatic liver cancer;
- treatment of pancreatic gland cancer;
- possible wider range of indications for other malignant neoplasms’ localizations
The product is inserted locally and radiates one specific tumor node, which determines application of it and is suitable for primary liver cancer treatment.
Application efficiency
- significant tumor regression; its transfer into respectable (operable) condition;
- full regression of small tumors.
Microspheres with ittrium-90
Microspheres with ittrium-90 - an active implanted medical product:
- microparticles of biocompatible polymer or biocompatible glass with average diameter of approximately 30 micron;
- internal structure of microparticles contains atoms of ittrium-90 radioactive isotope.
Indications: applied for treatment of non-operable primary and metastatic liver cancer.
Operating principle:
- embolization (blocking) of tumor vessels;
- selective accumulation in a tumor and its gradual destruction with directed radiation;
- microspheres with ittrium-90 are inserted intravenously, which allows maximum affection of tumor foci, thus application thereof is good for metastases treatment.
- Application sphere can be expanded for other localizations of malignant neoplasms.
Application efficiency: based on literature data,
- average survival of patients in case of application both microspheres with ittrium and chemotherapy increased from 13 to 27 months compared with chemotherapy treatment only;
- 89% of patients show positive treatment response;
- 27% show smaller tumor volume.
Using of radionuclide therapy method, including for treatment of liver and pancreatic gland cancer, has obvious advantages:
- small invasiveness of medical products implantation procedure;
- short patient hospitalization period at a medical institution after operation;
- high therapeutic efficiency;
- low possibility of complications development.
